Breast Implants: 9 Considerations to Ensure the Best Results

Contrary to the common stereotype, the typical patient requesting breast enhancement is not a Hollywood teen queen.  She does not make her living by showing off her body.  She does not have a domineering boyfriend who has been browbeating her into looking like Dolly Parton.

On the contrary, the typical breast enhancement patient is a regular person....

  • She has been thinking about a breast augmentation ever since puberty--when her breasts never developed to her satisfaction
  • She may be in her early 20s, but she may also be in her 70s or 80s.
  • Usually she liked the increased breast fullness that came with her pregnancies.
  • But she tends not to like the droopiness that occurred after she stopped breast feeding.
  • Her husband or boyfriend is, to be honest, a bit bewildered.  He loves her as she is, but he is willing to support her decision--whatever it may be.

Does this woman sound like you?

If so, you are not alone.  The newest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons indicate that breast augmentation is the #1 most popular cosmetic surgery performed by Board Certified Plastic Surgeons.  Breast lifting is the #7 most popular cosmetic procedure.  The average breast enhancement patient is in her 30s or 40s, has had children, and is in a stable and loving relationship.  She wants to improve her own self-image and self-confidence.  She is pursuing plastic surgery to please no one but herself.

However, before you visit the plastic surgeon, you should spend some time learning about the procedure.  You and your doctor will need to customize the operation so that it is the right one for you--for your chest and for you as a person.

Consider...

  1. How do I find the right doctor?
  2. Should the implants be filled with silicone or saline?
  3. Should the implants be round or tear-drop-shaped?
  4. When should the surface of the implants be smooth versus textured?
  5. Which incision should my surgeon use to place the implants:  through the umbilicus, through the armpits, around the areolae, or beneath the breasts in the folds?
  6. Should the implant be placed on top of or beneath the chest wall muscles?
  7. What size implants are best for me?  How much projection would be most attractive?
  8. Do I also want to change the shape of my breasts?  Do I need a lift, in addition to or instead of implants?
  9. Am I willing to accept the risk of surgical complications?

In the next 9 blog posts, I will attempt to answer each question in detail.  Then, you will be armed with all of the information to make the decisions that will be uniquely correct for you!
